Greater contrast is not possible…..
Walking through the almost busiest street of Amsterdam, De Kalverstraat, between lots of big stores and big advertisements signs, there is a neo-gothic gable with a parrot and the statue of Saint Josef.
This brown door gives entrance to the Holy Peters and Paul Church, better know as 'The Parrot'. At the door is a big sign with the text 'Een kwartier voor God' (A quarter of an hour for God), it is an invitation to come and leave the hectic of life behind, yes for only 15 minutes.
The Parrot was the former hiding-church built in 1700 in the yard of a house, probably a bird salesman. Around that time there was no freedom of believing, nowadays we are more 'tolerant' and The Parrot is an oasis of peace and quiet.
My dad was born in Amsterdam and every time we would visit the city, he would take me there and we would just walk around and enjoy the beauty, being a Mennonite, we have plain churches, not as richly decorated as this church.
When I worked in Amsterdam and I had a 'bad-day-at-the-office-' I would just slip in and found my peace of heart I needed.
It was my privilege to show Ginnie and Tracy this beautiful place I used to visit with my dad who passed away in March 26 years ago.

Thank you for sharing this Astrid
Picturit: You are so welcome, I think we all have those hidden places some where, Astrid.
What a beautiful tribute to this sacred spot for you. The photo shows the peace somehow.
Picturit: Mary, in this church, the most beautifull music is heard and than the really quiet, no 'city-sounds'....just the music, it IS peace in there, Astrid
In this image, Astrid, there is the the Holy Mother and her Child, but what I see is your father and you. This place is YOUR place and Your memory. It will never be any other memory for ME than YOUR church, YOUR dad, YOUR place of peace midst the hectic, commercial life of Amsterdam.
I am very glad I never entered this church until you led Tracy and me in with you. Ontzettend bedankt, mijn vriend.
Picturit: I still can see your surprised faces as I led you through the door, it was if we were entering in a different time zone, the serenity, we were almost to scared to take pictures, it made NOISE.....but this one I had to take and I am glad I did, an unique place in hectic Amsterdam, I love it, graag gedaan, Astrid.
I love the beautiful gold. And the use of light.
Picturit: They did have the lighting very well in order in this church, just perfect, I am glad it shows in this picture, Astrid.
Lovly photo thanks for the information
Picturit: You are so welcome, I am glad I could find some information on the internet, it is a very small almost unknown place, Astrid
You give a very good, informative and personal information to this peaceful "kwartier voor God" (what a wonderful name!)!
Ginnie' comment is wonderful, zo vriend-elijk!
This is one of the nice things about churches - even if you are not a practising church-goer or believer, you can still enjoy them as a place of sanctuary and peace. I love the way the statue is highlighted by the sunshine.
Ingrid
Picturit: Ingrid, this is so true, I look at these scenes as if I am in a huge museum, the artwork, the paintings, those are masterpieces, a joy for the eye, I keep on saying that, thank you as always, Astrid.
I love the beautyful colour tones and the lighting. You words are very touching Astrid
Nice to read your introduction - thank you for sharing the safe haven with us ;o)
Picturit: You are so welcome, sometimes it is good to share things, the things that are important, have a nice day Mike, Astrid.
Oh, now I see the child has a blessing gesture, and the mother is adoring him, the Jezus Christus! Wonderful wooden artwork indeed! Look only at the pleats of the clothing!
It's a beautiful statue Astrid, and you're right it does have an air of serenity, weren't the makers clever to achieve it.
Picturit: This is what I like about roman catholic church, the most beautiful pieces of art are there, Astrid
Very nice picture of holy mother and child. Thanks for sharing it Astrid.
Picturit: Gishan you are so welcome, I am pleased I could share, Astrid.

Wonderfull shot Astrid great light and a very touching story. I think we DO all have a place like this somewhere.
Picturit: Yes Mick, we do have those places and there is nothing wrong with sharing with dear friends who understand, thank you for your kind words, Astrid.
This obviously means a lot to you to go to this place and I can understand why you go there from time to time. Peace from a busy world.
Picturit: We all need a place like this so once in a while, just sit down with no thoughts at all, thanks Brian, you are so right, Astrid.
Oh Astrid, your recounting of your experience with the parrot is wonderful. I have always loved going into city churches just to sit and take in the quiet and peace.
Picturit: Ruth, this place is almost heaven on earth, the music is just great, the statues, there are so many, are just such wonderful pieces of art, it is a nice peaceful place, Astrid.
A perfect picture for Sunday Astrid.

Great photo; great story. Well found!
Picturit: Thank you Wim, sometimes it is good to share some personal story's behind the pictures I take, Astrid.
beautiful Astrid
Picturit: Thanks Tim,
a very personal story with this one Astrid photo and story beautifully matched. mal
Picturit: Thank you so much Mal for your kind words, it was my pleasure.
I think that this one is not so good as the other photos of the Dom. There are no details in the photo. I like a the details in your photo and this one hasn't.
Picturit: Well Jeroen this was taken in a church in Amsterdam and the lighting is much different, the one in the Dom I took at a high aperture and tripod, this one was taken by hand, so that's why and it was about the story behind it, Astrid.
Lovely warmth, it brings some life to the statue.
Picturit: I am pleased you like it Jewlya, the lighting made it look like gold, Astrid.
Beautiful image of a place that evokes wonderful memories of your father. It is an honour to have you share it with us.
Beautiful! The photo and the memories.
Picturit: Thank you Helen, sometimes I just have to tell someting more than only where it is taken, sometimes the why....adds, Astrid.
15 minutes for God, such places must be there on every corner of the street. Although I like the picture as a good documentation of a cultural expression, it's not the kind of statue that would inspire me. If you go to http://erikspictures.aminus3.com/image/2007-04-14.html, then you will see what I mean. Thanks for visiting!
Picturit: I like your statue very much, but mine was more about the story behind it, Astrid
