This reminds me (on a small scale) of the bike parking ramps outside Centraal Station in Amsterdam, Astrid. You have to utilize the space you have if you want to accommodate everyone. BUT BUT BUT...how do they get them up there?
I love (again) where you have your watermark!
Picturit: How does is work..on the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
Astrid
That's interesting and new to me. The whole thing looks a little over-engineered...what ever happened to the time-honoured tradition of just flinging bikes in a heap, and then rummaging through the mound to recover them later...it s one of the things that led to the sturdy construction of bikes initially.
Excellent image, Astrid.
Picturit: Thank you Ray, I do agree, where are the times of the heaps of bikes....remember....in Holland we have a lot of bikes and we have little space...I can show you some pictures what happens if they don't come up with these inventions, I told Ginnie how it works....
Astrid
A good picture starts with a good composition and you got it just right.
I love the texture too. Simply nice still life photography.
Picturit: Thank you Bob, for your kind words, I am pleased you like it.
Astrid.
Multi storey parking for bike very ingenious Musketeer.
You do need them though, as Ginnie said I also remember the mass of bikes around the station too Lovely use of B&W mijn vriend. Now we're rocking
Picturit: You have seen the heaps of bikes in Amsterdam, 'we' need these places more than ever...I am pleased you like this one
You know I love to rock and roll, life is too bored if we don't do that... Astrid.
I wondered how they got them up there and then read your comment to Ginnie. An ingenious use of space and a good subject for a picture.
Ingrid
Picturit: Thanks Ingrid, this is just one of those things I like to show how 'we' do things.
Astrid.
How sensible! Lovely mono, Astrid. (:o)
Picturit: Thanks Roz, I am pleased you like it.
Astrid.
Good it happens to B&N and seen the place very well for your watermark!
Picturit: Thanks José-Angel, it is not my bike though but a great place for my watermark.
Astrid.
I like the line-up here! I wonder what mechanism is used to stack up the bikes on the top rack.
I love your discreet signature.
Picturit: Thanks Richard, I am pleased yopu lik this one, this is how it works.....on the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
Astrid
lol - how on earth do you get a bike up there, super shot. mal
Picturit: Thank you Mal, I am pleased tou like it, this is how it works......on the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
Astrid
This is fascinating Astrid, thank you for telling us how it works. I know which bike belongs to you, it has your name on it ;-)
Picturit:
Astrid.
great line up... nice to go with B&W here.
Picturit: Thank you Chantal, I am pleased you like it,
Astrid.
Crikey, Astrid, you Hollanders think of everything. I see that you have scratched your name on that bicycle too...tut tut.
Picturit: erm...erm...that is a real 'Astrid' bike, unique in Utrecht, never a flat tire, rides smoothly, takes me everwhere I want....so ....
Astrid.
Smart - great idea!
Picturit: Thank you Ruth, they came up with some great inventions.
Astrid.
Ahhhh, I haven't been on a bicycle in many, many years. Nice one Astrid, I noticed this particular brand/type appears quite popular.
Bikes are always a perfect objects, is je aanvraag al bevestigd?
Picturit: Ja, vanmiddag, ontzettend leuk, ik verheug me er wel op,
bikes are great objects to capture. Astrid.
How clever Astrid!
Picturit: Thanks, people with little space has to be clever I think...
Astrid.
LOL, it is bad if there isn't enough room to park bikes! Here we complain if we can't fit our five 20 foot SUVs on the driveway... Madness!
Picturit: It really is, that is the difference in countries, our parking for the cars is not big enough for the SUV's either, they take 2 places.......that is madness too.
Astrid.
Never seen one of those before
Picturit: Thank you Magnus for your kind words.
Astrid.
These double-decker-bike-parking-places (Oh, what a monster-word!) are very useful and cool, but how do they function? I think I have to look at our bike-station at the Central Station. Weer grappig je handtekening op 'je' echt Hollandse fiets! Ik denk dat je fiets wordt nu beter beveiligd!
Picturit: Philine, I mad that word, I don't know how the real thin is called...it works like this....on the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
Dit is een echte 'Astrid' fiets...in mijn studenten tijd had ik er zo één en dan knalgeel geschilderd...NOOIT gestolen.... Astrid.
Yeah, how do they get them up there? I may be at a disadvantage especially since I'm height challenged
Picturit: Well you don't have to climb it.it works like this... the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
Astrid.
Could only be Amsterdam - nice crisp B&W with good light and a strong diagonal.
Picturit: Thanks Mike, I appreciate your kind words.
Astrid.
We could do with more of these
Picturit: I know, it is space-saving
Astrid.
Intriguing! I know the Dutch use their bikes more than us Brits but these bikes seem very similar. I can't say I've heard of teh "Astrid" model before, though!
Picturit: But Alan, the "Astrid" model is famous, it runs smoothly, it never has flat tires, I sit on it like the queen of Holland and it takes me any where I want....., thank you Alan for your kind words.
Astrid.
Are, the architypel Dutch bicycle we all read about, and the picture works well in B&W. I'm not even going to try and work out how the bikes get in the top rack.
Picturit: Brian it is so easy, ..on the left side you see the '0' shaped handle bar, you pull that towards you than the rail slides down, now you put your bike into the iron rail that is 'U' shaped and than you lift that and it slides back into space, it does not take too much force for it has springs in them...I always put my bike on top....it takes more effort to steal it
thank you for your kind words. Astrid.
The Astrid model looks a little conservative to me...must be a different Astrid!
Picturit: This is the 'original' in former days I had that one in bright yellow, can you imagine, nobody would steel it.....
Astrid.
New to me too. never seen a double decker bike stand. nice work.
Picturit: Thank you Mick, it had been a while sinse I have spotted them, thank you for your kind words.
Astrid.
Never saw a double decker bicycle rack before. Very nice!
Picturit: Yes, it is fun to see and well thought of.
Astrid.
I've never seen anything like this before - double decked!
Picturit: Yes it is a fun sight, but so well thought of.
Astrid.
