...Boat Friday...

On Thursday the 18th of Januari 2018 we had a code RED in the Netherlands.

Code RED (weather alert): take action
This is a weather alert in which extreme weather has a major impact on society. The weather situation can cause so much damage, injury and nuisance that it can be disruptive to society. This can be very local. Code red is issued at the earliest 12 hours before the weather phenomenon occurs. Code red can also be issued if there is a small chance of an extreme weather situation, but the safety risks are great.

This (link) is Ginnie's picture of that same boat.

I am imagining little boys with fingers jambed into dykes all over the country, Astrid!
Picturit: They need all the fingers available HA.
Lucky that we in Hollandshire are thinking ahead and making the dykes higher and higher to keep our feet dry.
Astrid.
Sweet shot.
Picturit: Thank you, Michael.

Oh, what big waves- yes, we had a red code in Munstershire, too - hundreds of trees fell down, hundreds of buildings were damaged - today we have snow again!
Picturit: sad we will have snow next week. And yes lots of trees were down...
Astrid.
I'll never forget that day, Astrid. I even remember that you said we needed to take our glasses off, lest they got blown away!
Picturit: Ginnie, that was something else and next time we go out again and get some pictures and take care of our glasses....
Astrid.

This looks very rough Astrid. Glad all the dykes stayed intact!
Picturit: Thank you, Chris. No dykes collapsed... it is always scary..

It almost looks as if it is going under, Astrid. You should have been indoors, but then we wouldn't have the chance to see this exciting picture!
Picturit: This was fascinating and yes it looks like the boat is almost under water. Can you imagine making a living this way???
Next time I go again, it is a challenge to get some good pictures and not being blown away.
Astrid..
You and Ginnie have captured the drama of nature's ferocity Lady P
Picturit: Yes indeed and it was fascinating and I never underestimate this force of nature.

That must have been very exciting to be on board. I like excitement like this, you know, a bit of danger.
Picturit: Yes indeed. Life is dull without some excitement, as long nobody dies, I am in....
Astrid.
Dit is net zo heftig als bij G.
Een kalm weekend toegewenst.
Picturit: Dank je wel, dat zal wel lukken, Marjolein.
Astrid.
What was the warning for? Wind? Rain? Cold temperature? I am guessing wind.
Picturit: This time it was wind. I can be any warning...

Very dramatic indeed. I think many a dutchie was thinking of Zeeland 1953.
Picturit: Oh indeed... that was quite something and many people and living stock died.
Thank God we have the Delta works and I am glad they keep the whole plan updated and make sure the dykes are made higher each time.
Astrid.
I would hate to be on board thatc raft in those choppy waters.
Picturit: That would be quite the experience, Brian...

Dies not seem to be the best of weatehr to be out on a boat. It looks low in the water in any case and will soon be even lower unless the action seeks shelter soon. The car ferry in the background looks to be moored up.
Picturit: The car ferry waved to us "NO GO' when we tried to get a ride to the other side.. we knew before we even went up there. We were with Nelson, Ginnie's brother. That was a fun day!!!
I'm always less willing to try to climb on it smile
Beautiful image
Picturit: I think you have to have a good stomach for rides like this...
Thank you, Claudio.
Astrid.
Not a day to be out on the water!
Picturit: I agree and I think the pilot might have his doubts. He might have a deadline to be on time in Rotterdam to empty his ship into a bigger one and get his money.
Astrid.
It looks pretty scary
Picturit: I could tell that the engines were really working and only view boats were out. However if they have a deadline to be on time in Rotterdam (against the current)... what do you do??

Not a day to be onboard that boat. You captured the scene wonderfully smile
Picturit: Stay inside and keep everything closed.... thank you, Cherry. weather like this is very spectacular for pictures.
Astrid.
I just think this is fantastic - terrific image, and presentation!
Picturit: Thank you, Elizabeth. It was fun to have a theme what I normally don't do. I pick my pictures randomly...
I love this kind of weather, it gives great pictures.
Astrid.
Like I mentioned to Ginnie...how SCARY!
Picturit: It is amazing how deep the barge is and still plowing through.... To be there was spectacular. Not often that I am able to see this, mostly weather conditions are like these during the week....
Astrid.
this is a stunning image, Astrid. yes, we did hear about the strong weather conditions in the Netherlands.
Picturit: Thank you, Ayush. For some reason the wind just came slightly from a different direction causing those problems...
Astrid.
