photoblog image .....run for hope.....

.....run for hope.....

I run, without watching the time,

I run, in my favourite outfit,

I run, with the wind through my hair,

I run, just me and my thoughts,

I run, in my favourite polder,

I run, where ever I want,

I run, when ever I want,

I run, because I am a running woman….

These words are so simple, how many women would love to run

but are not able to run, how many women have cancer,

how many women need radiotherapy treatments and

how much money do we need to keep the research going to find treatments for this disease.

Last Sunday I ran the 12 km of the 'Runner's World Zandvoort Circuit Run', this was a run, part on an auto racing track,

the beach and the town of Zandvoort, 10.000 participated and there was € 33.000.- ( $51.580 £ 26.000) raised for Kika,

a special organisation that does research in child cancer.

Most runs in Holland have the opportunity to raise money for the cancer research.

For me it is 'easy' to participate in such a run,

but I feel humble, compared by the effort of Bernie, who is in training,

with her two sisters, for the Race of Life in Hampstead,

London on the 8th June, Bernie was diagnosed with cancer one year ago and after treatment she is now in remission.

I am glad that all over the world, runs are organized so that we can raise money to continue the research into finding a cure for this terrible disease.

With this little story I like to draw attention to her fund raising and wish her the best of luck with her training.

BTW my husband took the large and the left picture, I was some where between all those enthusiastic runners....

it was a pity that is rained during the race, many supporters were along the route.

My time........1.21.45....for me that's okay, I got my t-shirt and a medal.

A worthy cause, a fun event by the looks of it, and a quick time. Well done, Astrid!
Picturit: Martin it was great to run that circuit, all those curves and the hills in it, the beach was tough but fun too, when I was on street level again, I looked back, I just saw a few miles of running people on the beach, that was awesome. I was happy with my time, it was a PR for me and yes it is a worthy case, thank you for your kind words.
Astrid.
Congrats on participating in the run.
Picturit: Thank you Michael, it was all my pleasure and a for a good case.

This has actually brought tears to my eyes, Astrid. I thought I knew all about your race last Sunday, rooting you on from here in Atlanta. BUT I never once knew it was a race raising money for children's cancer! How did I miss that?!

I have tears in my eyes as well because I know the time and energy it took you to write this text in English, without anyone's help. It speaks to what is important in your heart and how you want to make a difference.

Lastly, I have tears in my eyes because some of us remember a year ago when we helped Bernie raise over and above her goal in the race for her own life. She's come a long way since then. Thank you for the reminder that we're all in this "race" together.
Picturit: Ginnie, we are in this race together and I feel humble compared to all the effort some one with cancer has to make to get well again, if I and many 'healthy' others can help, I don't hesitate to put on my running shoes and run, my 'pain' only last for a few houres.......
Thank you Ginnie for these kind words.
Astrid.
An awesome post today, Astrid. I'm glad you shared this with us. I'm very proud of you for your great accomplishment.
Picturit: THank you Mary, I am only a very very small part in this, but I am glad I could at least be part of it....

Picturit: Hope, that is the key-word in this, Vintage, for if we let go of our hope, than there is nothing left for us...Thank you for your kind words.

You're my champion, Astrid.
Picturit: Thank you Viktor, your words mean a lot to me, I only was a smal part in this all, but I felt proud that I could be part of it and I had my difficult times during the race, after the 10th km...but I never quit....never.....for it was for a good cause.

oh my, I just noticed "Astrid 2008" on the board. See, this is the ultimate in skills, you blended it seemlesly.
Picturit: smile Viktor, you know me, I can be very serious BUT...BUT....I keep joking around, for if I loose my sense of humor and if I cannot laugh at myself so once in a while, than I feel miserable, so I could not resist putting my name on one of those billboards......I had fun doing that and I was one of the sponsors wink grin.

A true Musketeer lives up to the saying ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALLsmile You have done your self proud Astrid but most of all you have done everyone proud.
Last year I also raced in the same race as Bernie but I did not know her then.(Trentham Gardens Race for Life).
Youe text if comendable mijn vreind, for me you are top class Ladytongue
Picturit: Tracy, it is a pity that I am on this side of the pond, for I would have loved to run with Bernie, I think that would be super, I think you would have joined in too and we all would succeed for in our mind we know it is for a good cause and that makes us that we do even better than we would have ever thought we would be able to do.
Thank you for your kind words.
Astrid.
Well done Astrid. I'm cheering for Bernie and her sisters too. Wouldn't it be great if sc'ers all sponsored her!
Picturit: Bill, I have great respect for Bernie and all of the others that run inspite of their illness, I do hope a lot will join in with the sponsoring.
Thank you for your kind words.

Well done, Astrid. I see youir name on the advertisement hoarding too which is great. Are those your shoes? they look so dinky.
Picturit: Thanks Chad, yes that are my shoes, I have to get news ones though, they only last 1000km, I run on the pavement, so I need really good shoes, I have to make sure I don't get injuries, everytime I run I have my GPS-watch and write down the distance, when it hits 1000, I go to the shop....only a few more weeks...P)

I feel humbled by your kind words Astrid. Finding out I had cancer was one of the most devastating things that has happened to me and my family, the other being losing my mum to cancer 12 years ago.

And although the surgery and radiotherapy wasn't pleasant there are others who have suffered a lot more than me. I went to visit a friend of mine in a hospice last Friday - she was diagnosed with lung cancer 18 months ago and having battled through surgery etc. and finally being on the road to recovery she has just found out that she has cancer in her spine.

And therefore like you Astrid as long as I'm healthy I'll try and do my little bit to raise money to find a cure for this terrible disease.

Many thanks again for your kind words and support Astrid.

Very best wishes
Bernie xxx
Picturit: Bernie, you are more than welcome, with this little effort, I can help too, I think if a lot of people will help in this way, THAT will make the diference.
The running and raising money adds to the feeling that 'we' run for a good cause, Bernie, you are in my thoughts while you get your training, you will do good and you have two dear sisters side by side of you, I am proud of you all.

Hi Astrid. Well done for doing the run. It is such an important thing to do. My wife Hayley ran in the Norwich "race for life" same basic cause 'cancer research'. Ther were nearly 6000 women running. The oldest was about 80 !!Good luck to you.
Picturit: That to me is great, we have in Holland 'the Mariekenloop' 10.000 women running, I was last year in that too, THAT is amazing, age is not important, I am 53.....I am not the fasted and not the slowest, I have fun doing so and that is the most important and if we can raise money by running....I will never say no....
Thank you for sharing, John.
